Deities & Altarpieces
Between the wind of reality and the realm of dream there are creatures we know are there. Energies and spirits we can not see, but feel all the more. They are the deities who inhabit the places we fear, long for or wish we could be. It is the wind that blows through nature. Sometimes nature itself and the earth we must stand on. Even if you don’t believe, these creatures are as real as your thoughts. They are made of dreams, fears and everything in between. They were here before the birth of mankind and will be there after we are gone. They exist in our mind and still are deities blowing in the wind.
For most people the word “Deity” stands for God or something Godlike. Maybe they are Gods, maybe they are not. It’s not important how we see them, it’s important how they conceive themselves. How they want to interact with us and what we can do to rise up to their expectations. Or for a better understanding, how we can rise to be better than our own expectations. How we can touch the energy of Gods and become more than merely a product of humanity. This is where deities can help us, want to help us. They want us to rise above ourself, to become more. For they are the ones to whom we direct our prayers, dreams and hopes.
The handmade altarpieces
To direct your prayers, hopes and life questions it can be helpful to have an altar. A place to direct your energy, a place of worship if you will. From the dawn of man people have made depictions of their deities. From drawings on rocks, to full-blown detailed statues of the Gods. Everything to appease and create a place to talk to them. Something you want your altar at home to be. A place for channeling the sacred energy. And what better way than to have an altarpiece to represent the deity you want to receive your energy, to hear your thoughts, prayers and wishes.
My deity statues and altarpieces originate from a need to create them. Sometimes from a personal need, most of the time from being asked by the spiritual energy to make them a form they can inhabit.
In thrift shops and other places I find odd things, pieces, bits and bobs that I find appealing. For reasons unknown to me, it resonates and wants to come home with me. There it can lay dormant for weeks, sometimes months, until suddenly a spark of divine intervention speaks to me. Asks me to create a deity statue or a new altarpiece. That is the moment I go through my collection of thrifted objects, stuff I have found and things I already had. It is the moment when everything comes together and I can create a new altar piece, a new deity form, a representation of spiritual energy.
All these pieces are then consecrated through ritual and infused by magick to hold the spirit of that deity, the energy. So that a soul and a purpose to emerge in the material shape of the object. Then the statues are ready for a new home, where they need to be looked after and cared for. As I will do, until they find their way to you.
